sick of being a useless intern?

i wake up early every day
and ride to work on the L & C subway
some might think i've got it made
the problem is - i don't get paid

i'm just a useless intern, see
no one wants to employ me
i pay my rent with student loans
& the cost of living makes me groan
i've had a lot of internships now
at elite museums - you wonder, 'how?'?
i guess i'm a sort of smartish bro
but if smarts are enough, i do not know

i build models, do research, and write reports
i've done collections, exhibits - work of all sorts
i have degrees from two prestigious universities
and i'm G-damn sick of working for free!
can i have a job, please, in new york or san fran?
or some sunny city where i'll get a good tan?
can i start getting paid to do all this work?
or will i keep interning, and just go berserk?

it's not like i care a lot about money
but i do like to buy that expensive organic honey
i'd like to buy my parents some stuff -
of this crippling debt i've just had enough!
i know i'm young, and i should get some experience
but really - i get it - that's not what my fear is
my fear is that no one will give me a shot
and i'll intern till i'm 40 whether i like it or not

sick to death of paying my dues
why can't i just get paid like you?
just want to do some meaningful work -
but maybe i will just go tot'ly berserk
